Simple Skirt for Spring (With Tutorial)

It took forever for me to write because I find it difficult to find the time. Life itself is pretty busy with two young children in tow (excuses...excuses...excuses).

Lama sekali buat saya untuk punya waktu buat menulis lagi. Keseharian hidup saya cukup sibuk apalagi dengan dua anak kecil yang selalu membuntuti saya (alasan....alasan....alasan).

Last Monday, when my son was doing his school homework, my daughter was playing with her barbie dolls, I was busy creating this simple elastic waist band skirt for my daughter. It literally took me about 45 minutes from start to finish. When my son was done with his homework, I was done with my skirt.

Let's get started.

Mari kita mulai.

1. Prepare all the materials you need;  fabrics ( I used cotton. Any medium light weight fabrics should do), measuring tape, pins, coordinating thread, scissors, elastic band and your sewing machine.

Siapkan bahan-bahan yang dibutuhkan; bahan kain (Saya pakai katun. Kain dengan ketebalan medium), alat ukur meteran, jarum pentul, benang, gunting, elastic band (namanya apa dalam bahasa Indonesia?, mesin jahit.

2. It depends on who do you want to make this skirt for. I made this for my daughter. If you want to make it for yourself or your daughter, just adjust the measurement.  My daughter is pretty tall for girls her age.

- Measure her waist or your waist. Hers is 21 inches then I added another 21 inches so it becomes 42 inches.
- The length of her skirt (waist to a little bit above her knee) is 13 inches and I added 4 more inches for the waist line and the bottom hem. The total length is 17 inches
I cut the fabric in equal rectangular size measuring 21 inches X 17 inches each piece. Looking like this.

Tergantung mau bikin rok buat siapa. Saya bikin buat anak saya.

4. So now you have two pieces of rectangular fabric. With right side together, attached them together with pin sew along both edges of the length of the skirt. Like this one. I use serger to sew the raw edges if you don't have one you can use the zigzag mode on your sewing machine.

5. Then I am sewing the waist line. Press about  inches with your iron and tuck in the raw edge about 1/4 inches.

6. Sew along the folding edge and leave a room about 2 inches to insert your elastic. Depending on how wide your elastic is, sew another line above your first (I made casing). I use half inch elastic so sew about 3/4 inches on top of the first line.

7. Cut your elastic if you haven't done so. My daughter total original waist is 21 inches so I cut I inch less which is 20 inches.

Potong elastic.

8. Using safety pin, insert the elastic on the waist band and sew the edge together. Then sew the opening part of the waist.

8. Back to your iron, press the bottom line of the skirt about 1.5  inch and tuck in the raw edge about 1/2 inch. Sew along the hem line.

Kembali ke setrika, saya lipat bagain bawah rok sekitar 2.5 cm dan lipat bagian kecil dibawah sekitar 1 cm. Jahit bagain bawah rok atau hem.

9. Your skirt is done!! You can enjoy it here.

Roknya pun selesai.

But I did not just stop there, you can but let's be a little bit more creative and make this skirt prettier. Taking it up a notch!
I want to put bow on the skirt. My daughter loves bow.

10. Cut three small pieces of left over fabrics to make the belt holder. I cut mine measuring 1 inches in wide and 2 inches in length. With right side together I sew along the length.

11. I turned the right side out with the help of safety pins (gotta love safety pins). Then I sew two belt holder in the center front and one in the center back.

12. And I insert this simple navy blue bow. Now the skirt is looking prettier.

Lalu saya masukan pita berwarna biru tua ini. Rok ini pun jadi lebih cantik.

The Crunchy French Toast

Have I told you that other than sewing, I also like to cook? Oh yes I do. As much as I enjoy eating out at a restaurant, trying out new recipe and cooking at home can be as joyful. Especially, every time I see my family enjoying the food I cook for them.

Most of the time, after I try certain food at a restaurant and I like it or my husband like or my kids like  it, the next few day I am experimenting the same food on my own. I Google similar recipes, added a few thing and create one of my own. I have so much fun doing that.

A few weeks ago, my girl friends and I had brunch at a restaurant in West Hollywood called Blu Jam Cafe. They have this famous crunchy French toast that I often heard people talked about. It's pretty good. So what I did the next few days was to create the similar recipe.

And here is the Crunchy French Toast by E-Mann.

INGREDIENTS

6 or 8 slices of Texas toast bread, cut into half
2 cups corn flake cereal (lightly crushed)
3 large eggs
1/2 cup milk
Pinch of salt
1 teaspoon all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon lemon zest.
Butter
Confection sugar
Maple syrup

1. In a large bowl, whisk to mix the eggs, milk, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon zest, salt, and vanilla until blended. Be sure there are no lumps of unmixed flour. Pour into a pie pan or shallow dish. In batches, lay the bread pieces in the egg mix. Soak about 1/2 minute on each side in the egg mixture. Be careful not to rip the bread.

2. Place the bread pieces in the cornflake crumbs. Coat both sides with the crumbs. Place it on the heated pan coated with a little butter. Let it stay on medium heat for about 3 minutes each side or until brown.

3. Top with confectioner sugar or maple syrup or pancake syrup.

Born Free - The Beauty That Surrounds Us

Born free, as free as the wind blows. As free as the grass grows. Born free to follow your heart. Live free and beauty surrounds you. The world still astounds you. Each time you look at a star. Stay free, where no walls divide you. You're free as the roaring tide. So there's no need to hide,..."
Andy Williams sang this beautiful and powerful song that has become one of my favorite song to sing ever since I was a kid. Nowadays ,I often sing this song as a lullaby to my children. I sang it to my daughter last night.

I have been living in California for almost 12 years.  I love the land that I was born in, Indonesia and its beauty, and the richness of its cultures, but since 4 years ago,  I start to fall in love with California, the land where my two children were born in.

Saya tinggal di California hampir selama 12 tahun. Saya sangat mencintai tanah kelahiran saya, Indonesia dan segala kenindahan dan kekayaan budaya-nya, tetapi sejak empat tahun terakhir saya mulai jatuh cinta sama California, tanah tempat anak-anak saya dilahirkan.
The view of our city from the mountain

We live in the suburb of Los Angeles. Our city is neighborhood bordering the Santa Monica Mountains. Santa Monica Mountain is a mountain range in Southern California, along the coast of the Pacific Ocean in the United States. So technically we are surrounded the big city, the mountain and the ocean. We can easily drive to all direction within less than 30 minutes away.

We love to explore new places and  I suggested our family to visit the state park that we often heard but never really explored it. So off we went last Saturday. The park called Malibu Creek State Park, it's only 15 minutes by driving from our house. We had a little detour on our way to the park. Siri (on the Iphone) misdirected us but because of that, we were able to see a different side of the mountain which is totally gorgeous and breathtaking. Up by the mountain, there is a small town that we have never seen before. A town with big nice houses where wealthy people live, there is a lake, cabins and houses up in the hill with the view that overlooks the Pacific Ocean (Malibu and Santa Monica beach).

Malibu Creek State Park is over 7,000 acres of beautiful scenery that is truly spectacular. There are 15 miles of streamside trail through oak and sycamore woodlands and chaparral-covered slopes. What makes the park so great?  Dramatic, jagged peaks, stunning canyon vistas, oak woodlands, rolling hills of tall grass, a large volcanic swimming hole and the animals. That said, there are so many things we can do at this park; jogging, hiking, trailing, rock climbing, biking, kayaking, horseback riding, camping, bird watching or just simply be there enjoying the nature like what we did.

I just couldn't believe we missed this park after living in this city for over 12 years. It's like a hidden gem in a glamorous city of LA, Beverly Hills, Malibu, and Pacific Palisade.
This park was also used for the location of the legendary TV show M*A*S*H

We all had a good time. My children love the creek. They got their feet wet. They were hoping to swim there someday. When we went there last Saturday it was still too cold to dive into the water. To our surprise, on the way back home, we saw a skeleton of an animal. Not sure it was, it could be a fox or a coyote.

Taman ini juga dijadikan lokasi shooting salah satu TV show terkenal Amerika, M*A*S*H

Rock Climbing

Diving into the "cold" water. Salud!

This is fun for us. We try to step on the rocks so our shoes won't get wet.

We saw this on the way back to our car. Not sure what it is. Maybe skeleton of a fox or a coyote?

As we were walking along enjoying the beauty that surrounds us, I was humming Born Free because I do feel free.

Born free, as free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Born free to follow your heart
Live free and beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star
Stay free, where no walls divide you
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide
Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're born free
You're free as the roaring tide
So there's no need to hide
Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
'cause you're born free

In Sewing: Dresses and Skirts (Menjahit: Dress dan Rok)

"Grandma, you're really good at sewing. I hope someday I can sew a dress like you do"

Over 30 years ago, a little girl was watching her grandma sewing with an old Singer sewing machine.

"Nenek pintar sekali menjahit.

 ________________

Since I was young, I have been interested in sewing but I have never really pursued it until I moved to the United States almost 12 years ago. Being new to this country with no jobs at that time, I could not stay around the house doing nothing while waiting for my husband to come home from work. So I did a little sewing. We did not have any sewing machine at that time. My first three sewing projects are a table cover, a hanging shoe rack and a sofa cover. Yes, you read it right. A sofa cover. Because we did not have a sewing machine at that time and how did I do it? Yes you are right. By hand. I sewed by hand. Whew, talking about a girl who was trying to kill the time.

I bought this basic Singer sewing machine almost two years ago for a little bit well over $100 and 6 months after that I bought the serger machine (mesin obras). These are my two favorite toys.

I find a great deal of joy by sewing. Sewing is like my way of healing from the stress that I had at work. I feel like by sewing I can be myself. I can do anything I want to do. I can create something that I know I'll like. I can be creative without anybody telling me what to do. I have never had any formal training on sewing. I learn as I go.
Fortunately in this era where everything seems to be available for 24 hours, there seems to be no limit of what I'd like to learn. If I want to learn anything, it is just a simple one typing away. I found so many great instructions, tutorials the e-how to on Pinterest, Youtube, and Google. There are so many amazing easy to follow tutorials out there. I have been through so many trials and errors and I did not give up. After all, that's how we learn. From a very simple skirts from my daughter, now I can sew a couple of skirts and dresses for her and myself. I also sewed matching dresses with her.

Do you like to sew? If you do, would you care to share with me?
I am still learning. I am actually thinking of taking a formal class in sewing. To improve my skill.

Apakah kalian suka menjahit? Jika iya, bagi ceritanya ke saya dong?
Saya masih belajar. Saya sebenarnya berpikir untuk mengambil kursus menjahit. Untuk meningkatkan skill saya.

Below are some of my the clothes that I sewed. I have sewed more than the one in this blog.

I sewed this Raggedy Ann outfit for myself, only because my husband got the little Raggedy Ann outfit for our daughter. To match her outfit, I made one for myself and just bought the wig.

Saya menjahit kostum boneka Raggedy Ann untuk saya, karena suami saya membeli kostume boneka yan sama buat anak saya. Saya pikir biar matching, saya bikin saja kostume berukuran besar buat saya.
